This intriguing book is from the Extreme Nature Series showing examples of some of the most unusual events in nature. There are wonderful photographs of the bizarre plants as well as some of their inhabitants such as an elf owl nesting in a cactus, or a charming sea otter living in the stems of giant kelp. The Table of Contents certainly tweaks your interest with such listings as “Bulging Baobab,” “Strangler Fig,” and “Freaky Flower.” Keywords are highlighted in bold print and each section has a “Did You Know?” bit of information. At the back there is a quiz, a helpful glossary and books and Web sites listed to find out more about these amazing plants. This is a well–designed book about some weird plants sure to pique a child’s interest.
