An early advocate of Western technology, Kazuman Ogawa (1860–1929) became a pioneer in the field of photography and printing in Japan. A handsome son of a samurai, the military nobility, Ogawa opened his own portrait studio at the age of seventeen, launched Japan’s first art magazine, and by 1890 was recognized as the foremost photography publisher in Japan. The originals of this series of hand-colored floral collotypes, created through a technique for printing in a range of colors, are in the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.  —Marilyn Alaimo, volunteer, Chicago Botanic Garden.
