This is a personal gardening book in which the author reveals herself as patient and persevering, two traits she maintains are necessary for gardeners. Subtitled "Growing the Best Flowering Plants and Shrubs," this reprint of a 1903 classic advises on all aspects of gardening, including planning borders, soil, annuals, perennials, vines and insecticides. Some of Helena Rutherford Ely's discussions on the high costs of plants for a border ($30) and her views on garden and household help will seem rather quaint to us. However, the main body of advice remains pertinent now, as then, in this thoroughly readable and engaging book.
