Art and the Gardener

Nationally recognized garden designer Gordon Hayward will explore the visual language shared between painters and garden designers during this illustrated lecture. By juxtaposing a painting and a garden image on the screen, Hayward explores the many levels of similarity between how the painter and garden designer construct their images. He'll show what an impressionist passage in a garden looks like and also explore romanticism, abstract expressionism, cubism, and other visual styles. Hayward's new book, Art and the Gardener, will be available for sale and signing.

Take a Fresh Look at Your Garden

Gordon Hayward will help you bring new life and coherence your garden by walking you through a series of questions: What are you most happy and unhappy with in your garden? How have you related the lines of your house to those in your garden? Do you have an itinerary that you follow each time you show visitors through your garden? How have you taken advantage of your specific site and its particular qualities? Bring photos, drawings, or plans of your garden for reference.
