Do you like to walk around the Chicago Botanic Garden? How about riding in a golf cart? Do you enjoy helping people? Maybe a seasonal position in the Security Department is right for you. As a security officer, you would have a variety of duties including patrolling, enforcing Garden rules, and assisting visitors. Excellent customer service skills are required. A. Wednesday, Friday, Saturday: 7 a.m.-3 p.m. B. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday: 7 a.m.- 3 p.m. C. Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday: 11 a.m.-7 p.m. D. Monday, Tuesday, Sunday: 11 a.m.-7 p.m. E. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday: 11 a.m.-7 p.m. F. Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday: 8 a.m.- 4 p.m.

To serve visitors, members, and staff by maintaining the safety and security of the property and collections of the Garden.

Duties and Responsibilities: 
  1. Maintain the safety of visitors, employees, and property at the Garden while enforcing Garden rules and regulations.
  2. Provide information and assistance to visitors in a pleasant, professional manner.
  3. Work closely with Visitor Services to provide the best information and service to visitors.
  4. Maintain valid certification in cardiopumonary resuscitation (CPR), the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs), and standard first aid through Garden-provided training.
  5. Provide emergency first aid to employees and visitors.
  6. Prepare accurate and clear reports of accidents, illness, theft, vandalism, or any other unusual occurences. Manage with immediate notification to Security Department management.
  7. Perform responsibilities specific to each post as assigned: gatehouse, west gate, Dundee Road gate, Education Center, front of gateway, Information Desk, Malott Japanese Garden, Evening Island, Fruit & Vegetable Garden, etc.
  8. Control traffic whenever needed.
  9. Make appropriate Security Department vehicle operating and safety checks.
  10. Pick up and deliver people and materials as needed.
  11. Assist Security Department management in other areas as directed.

High school graduate or equivalent; oral and written communication skills.

Physical Demands: 
First aid and CPR training. Licensed driver insurable by the Chicago Horticultural Society. Must be able to lift and carry 25 pounds. Must be able to work overtime as required by the operational needs of the department.
