Overview: 
Do you enjoy interacting with people and plants? As an ambassador of the Chicago Botanic Garden, the ideal applicant has exceptional communications and customer-relations skills. Tour guides provide 35-minute scripted tours to adults and children while driving an open air tram or walking. As part of Visitor Operations, this staff person supports Garden events and exhibitions through ticket sales (using a computerized point-of-sales system) and way-finding. Creating a positive and memorable experience for Garden visitors is a priority. This position requires varied days, including weekends and holidays, up to 29 hours per week. Hours will vary.
Qualifications: 

Our ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Minimum age requirement of 21 years old.
  • Valid Illinois driver's license and driving record with no violations; insurable by the Chicago Horticultural Society is required. Must be safety-oriented.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required. College degree preferred.
  • Articulate, with a strong command of the English language. Bilingual (Spanish) a plus.
  • Available day, evening, weekend, and holiday hours.
  • Willing to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, occasionally severe.
  • Fast and accurate use of computerized point-of-sales system.
  • Adept and confident in providing an engaging tour while simultaneously driving safely.
  • Experienced in the service and/or tour industry, as a public speaker with a talent for engaging an audience of adults and children preferred.
  • Customer service oriented, able to work independently, and willing to work as a part of a team.
  • Able to accurately total, process, and collect payments from visitors including handling money, processing credit and debit cards, making change, and processing gift certificates.
  • Knowledge of horticulture preferred.
Physical Demands: 
Standing, sitting, walking, bending, lifting, listening, and speaking for long periods of time. Some requirements for lifting, pushing, pulling items up to 50 pounds. Physically able to climb aboard vehicle(s), assist passengers boarding the tram, and help visitors with disabilities by operating a wheelchair ramp and pushing visitors seated in a wheelchair. Exposure to outdoor environment, exposure to varied weather conditions, dust, and noise.
