My research uses phylogenetic analysis of molecular data to address questions regarding the evolution, ecology, diversity and conservation of Basidomycete (mushroom forming) fungi. Fungi are one of the most diverse groups of organisms on the planet and are responsible for numerous, vital associations with plants. However, fungi go relatively unnoticed in the environment, and as a result, it is estimated that more than 90 percent of existing fungi are still unknown to science. Imagine what important ecological activities must be going on with the fungi we have yet to discover. My experience ranges from classical taxonomy to using phylogenetic techniques to describe evolutionary and ecological roles of fungi. I use my experience to advance scientific understanding of fungal biodiversity and how fungi contribute to the stability and sustainability of forest ecosystems.
