2022 Latin Grammy nominees, Los Tangueros del Oeste, are steeped in the nuevo tango styles of Astor Piazzolla, Gotan Project, and Bajo Fondo. The group blends tango with beats and textures from hip-hop and electronica with flamenco influences filtered through an improvisational lens. Their singular nuevo tango sound is cool, impassioned, sensuous, seductive, and utterly dance-inducing. Featuring the piano virtuosity Latin Grammy winner Pablo Estigarribia, the bandoneon mastery of Charles Gorczynski, the hip-hop drums of Bay Area electronic music producer Daniel Riera (Snap Judgement, Soltron), the flamenco-inflected strumming of Venezuelan master guitarist Carlos Caminos, and the emotionally lyrical sounds of Puerto Rican violinist Ishtar Hernandez, surrounded by the lush compositions of bassist/composer/bandleader Sascha Jacobsen (Trio Garufa, The Musical Art Quintet), Alma Vieja is at once an album for tango lovers and an opening for all listeners into this magical world.
This concert is presented in collaboration with the International Latino Cultural Center.
