Sea Onion

The false onion, or pregnant onion, is native to South Africa where the hot, dry conditions allow it to reach its final height of up to four feet. This unusual bulb sits above the ground where its distinctive onion shape can be admired. While it bears green and white striped flowers on spikes, these are not especially showy. Because it is very tender the pregnant onion is generally grown as a potted plant and overwintered indoors where it is regarded as a tough reliable performer. It prefers warmth, sunshine, and regular moderate watering.
