Pink Turtlehead

If you look carefully at the pink flowers on this plant you'll see that they resemble a turtle's head poking out from its shell.

Pink turtlehead is a form of a plant native to south-eastern north America where it is found in moist areas adjacent to streams and ponds. It has an upright mounding habit, growing to about two feet tall and wide with dark green leaves. The pink flowers resemble a snapdragon or a turtle's head. It requires consistently moist soil and so does well in wet areas or rain gardens. Protection from afternoon sun is appreciated and so this plant does well as an understory beneath taller trees.
