Hawaiian Punch Elephant Ear
Hawaiian Punch elephant ear is a brightly colored leafy plant with lime green heart-shaped leaves and red stems that might remind you of rhubarb. It grows prolifically to about three feet tall and about three feet wide and prefers rich well-drained, but consistently moist soils.
Elephant ears are not hardy in Chicago but the corms can be lifted and stored in a cool, dark, dry location and replanted in the spring. Hawaiian Punch is suitable for large containers, partly shady borders, and as an understory planting. It is also very happy as an edging plant for ponds and streams.
