This cute, inconspicuous prairie plant is one of the few non-tropical members of the sandalwood family. It produces single-stemmed plants 6-12 inches tall with simple, alternate, untoothed, frosty green leaves topped by a cyme of tiny white flowers from late April through May. The flowers may have 4, 5, or 6 petals. The plants form colonies, spreading by underground rhizomes. They can grow in poor, gravelly soils. By June they are usually overwhelmed by taller prairie plants, not to be noticed again until the following spring.
