Hydrangea
‘SMHPLQF’ is often sold under the trade mark name Little Quick Fire. This is a dwarf shrub 3 -5 ft. tall with a spread of 2-4 ft. The cone shaped flowerheads are a mixture of densely packed showy but sterile flowers with smaller, fertile but nonshowy flowers underneath. The flowers emerge white and turn light pink, then a deeper pink as they mature. With new flowers continually emerging at the tip of the cone, the flowerheads are a lovely blend of color with creamy white at the tip melting into deepening shades of pink at the base. The blooms start in mid summer and continue into the fall with strong stems that hold the flower clusters upright and prevent drooping. The color of the flowers is not affected by the pH of the soil. ‘SMHPLQF’ does well in full sun to light shade and is moderately drought - tolerant. It blooms on new wood so it is not susceptible to late spring frosts. This is a hybrid of Hydrangea paniculata which is native to Japan, China and Korea where it grows at altitudes up to 4,000 ft.
