Paeonia 'Yan Long Zi' ("purple haze at twilight") is a traditional black-crown-form tree peony, so named because its petals resemble black velvet. Its 6-inch flowers are deep purple and bloom midseason. Tree peonies often need to settle in for one to two years before producing flowers; 'Yan Long Zi' is a dwarf variety growing to 3 feet tall. Plant in part shade with the eyes no more than 2 inches below the soil surface and protect from strong winds and afternoon sun. Deer resistant.
