English Shrub Rose

Heritage® English shrub rose (Rosa ‘AUSblush’) is another of the David Austin shrub rose releases. It features beautifully quartered, bourbon-type flowers in pink that blush to lighter shades near the edges, and a fragrance reminiscent of tea rose, citrus, and honey. These disease-resistant plants grow to 4 feet and perform best when planted in sunny, moderately moist, and fertile soils, protected in early winter with a mulch of shredded leaves or decomposed bark. The Chicago climate is really tough on this class of roses, and the Plant Evaluation Program continues to evaluate their new releases. "Quartered flowers" refers to a cup-shaped flower with the inner petals divided into quarters; this characteristic was a favorite of rose growers (French Bourbon aristocracy among them) before the introduction of the tea rose, with its long, pointed buds that open to symmetrically distributed petals. Quartered flowers traditionally are associated with a strong floral fragrance.
