Royal Paintbrush

The large masses of orange flowers accentuated with yellow stamens rise above a pair of large reddish purple showy bracts on a single flower stalk. The bulbs dislike disturbance and will 'sulk' after transplanting but the floral display when it does arrive is spectacular.  This South African native, like other members of this family is poisonous if ingested. Like other poisonous plants it is also used medicinally by native peoples for a number of ailments. Another example of the difference between a poison and a medicine is preparation and dosage.
