Hawaiian Sunset Vine

The dramatic Hawaiian sunset flower (Stictocardia beraviensis) is a stunning sight to behold. Native to Africa, its intense tricolored, sunset-hued, 2- to 3-inch-wide flowers bloom on a fast-growing vine. Related to the morning glory, with its thick stems and fleshy leaves, this evergreen climber produces scented, cup-shaped flowers that emerge at the leaf axils in clusters of bright crimson with yellow and orange streaking. Its large, heart-shaped, velvet-textured leaves can grow as wide as 1 foot in diameter in filtered light and 5 to 6 inches if planted in full sun, where the dark green leaves create a lush, tropical look. Attractive to bees, butterflies, and birds—and resistant to deer—this specimen thrives in USDA Zones 9-11. As with any blooming plant, the rule is, the more sun, the more flowers. However, even planted in shade, it will continue to bloom surrounded by larger leaves.
