Grubs

Q. I had problems with grubs in my lawn this summer. Is there anything I can do this fall, or should I treat the lawn next summer?

A. Chemical controls are warranted if the grub population has reached 10 or more grubs per square foot of turf. Peel back the affected turf and count the grubs. If there are 10 or more, you can spot-treat damaged areas with an approved insecticide for immediate action. As cold weather approaches, grubs tunnel deeper in the soil, putting them out of reach of most products. An alternative choice is to treat the damaged areas with imidachloprid in mid-July of next year. Always water the turf before and after applying these chemicals.
