Common Buckeye

Latin name:

Junonia [Precis] coenia

Native to:

Southern United States and north along the coasts to central California and North Carolina; south to Bermuda, Cuba, and Mexico

Plant Association:

Larvae feed on plants from the Scrophulariaceae family including snapdragon (Antirrhinum) and toadflax (Linaria). Adults feed on nectar from aster, chickory, gumweed, peppermint, and other flowers.

Interesting Fact:

Caterpillars and adults overwinter but only in the south. The markings or “eyespots” are probably used to scare away predators.
