Cloudy Monkshood
Large, almost white flowers are rimmed in pale lavender-violet all along the 3-foot stem from early fall up to the first hard frost. Attractive, deeply incised, dark green leaves are resistant to rabbits and deer. 'Cloudy' is happiest in moist soil and part shade, where the lovely pale colors shine out, but it can take full sun with consistent moisture.
Aconitums are often called monkshood because the upper sepal of each flower resembles the hoods of medieval monks. They attract butterflies and moths, and and are the primary food source for Old World bees. Another common name, wolfbane, refers to the poison made from this plant's roots, which was used to tip hunting arrows. Medicinal (and poisonous) uses of this plant date back to Roman times. What's the difference between a medicine and a poison? Dosage. Wear gloves to avoid skin irritation.
