Christmas Palm
This small statured feather palm gets its common name, Christmas Pslm, from the bright red seeds that ripen around Christmas in tropical climates. Light yellow to bright orange sheaths at the base of each leaf provide ornament throughout the year. Adapted to most environments it does not tolerate standing water or temperatures close to freezing. Young plants can be kept in large containers and moved indoors in the Chicago region but the need for very warm temperatures necessitate keeping it indoors from the first of September to mid-June. Prone to the lethal yellows palm disease that attacks many coconut palm relatives.
