Wine Drop Nodding Onion

Nodding onions are petite natives found growing in praries and margins of wooded areas. They form petite clumps of foliage with narrow leaves. This variety has lavender flowers with wine red pedicels (flower stalks). Like most alliums, nodding onion is not significantly bothered by deer and other mammalian herbivores, like moles. It also tolerates dry soils, drought, shallow and rocky soils and can grow under black walnut trees. This species is a larval host for the hairstreak butterfly; the flowers attract butterflies and bees that don’t mind feeding on the flowers.
