Rakkyo; Chinese Chives

Rakkyo, or Chinese chive, is an uncommon type of onion found in China and Japan. The small narrow bulbs are usually sold pickled. As an ornamental plant, it resembles chives, but the leaves are 3-angled in cross-section. It has the odd habit of becoming dormant in mid-summer. When the leaves have completely shriveled, it sends up stalks of small lavender flowers before disappearing entirely until the next spring. It rarely produces seeds and is propagated by division.
