White Japanese Onion

This unassuming little ornamental onion is often overlooked until October, when pure white flowers appear atop 10-inch stalks. The little bell-shaped florets nod downward with long stamens protruding from them. The leaves are very thin and round. Because it is so small, it should not be planted where it will be shaded out by taller plants. Japanese onions are the last of all onions to bloom in the Chicago area.
