Borneo Giant Elephant Ear

‘Borneo Giant’ is a cultivar of elephant’s ear almost as big as an elephant! The giant arrowhead-shaped, bright green, ruffled leaves grow strongly upright to a height of up to 10 feet. Each leaf can be up to five feet wide. These tropical plants, grown from tubers, grow in light shade or sun. They require steady warmth above 70 to sprout and flourish. They love humidity, but potted plants require good drainage. It takes two years to attain their full height. They are very susceptible to frost, so it may not be practical for the average gardener to try to grow this to its full size.

Although they may be called taros, it is the genus Colocasia, with drooping leaves, that produced the edible tubers for the Hawaiian dish poi.
