Marbled Ginger

Marbled ginger is a native of the Solomon Islands in the southwestern Pacific where it thrives in the warm humid climate, light sandy soils and partial light conditions under palms. This ornamental ginger is prized for the dramatic green and white chevron patterning of its leaves. The lovely pink bloom is rare but impressive with gracefully drooping inflorescences that can reach 10" long. Marbled ginger can reach a height of about five feet and will form clumps up to five or six feet wide in warmer locations. however it is not hardy in Chicago. The plant can potted and located in a suitable spot for overwintering or the rhizomes can be lifted and replanted the following season. The leaves will sunburn if grown in bright to full sunlight.
