Thimbleweed

This perennial native anemone grows to a height of 2 feet in full sun to partial shade and dry soil conditions. It has five-petaled white blooms with clusters of yellow stamens surrounding a green center, starting in June and continuing sporadically until late July. The flowers are followed by cylindrical seedheads about 1 1/2" tall. As the seeds ripen, the seedhead turns into a ball of white fluff. The deeply divided leaves have three to five deeply-toothed segements and long petioles, growing in clusters of three to ten on the flowering stems. It can be used in a border or an effective groundcover in a shade garden.
