Japanese painted fern is a small fern whose fronds are soft grayish-green with an overlay of silver and a contrasting dark maroon midrib. It requires partial shade to full shade with moderate moisture. It grows to a maximum height of 18 inches with a similar spread. It is mostly used as a ground cover, an understory plant, or in a shade border.
