Palm-Leaf Begonia
Yes, it looks like a palm tree but in fact, it’s a begonia…Begonia luxurians. It’s found only in the Brazilian rain forest, where it can reach a height of 13’ and sports its white flowers from late winter into summer. When grown as a house plant, it’s more likely to reach about 6’ and bloom is rare, so it’s grown primarily as a foliage plant.
It has large palmately compound leaves up to a foot across. Each leaf is divided into 9-14 finger-like lobes, connected at the base to a long red petiole. The plants are covered with small scattered bristles and have red stems that grow in a zig-zag fashion, changing directions each time a new leaf sprouts. If grown outdoors they will want filtered sun and need to be kept well-watered, but with good drainage.
