White Japanese Beautyberry
Callicarpa japonica, or Japanese beautyberry, is one of the stars of the fall garden, with its rounded clusters of berries produced at almost every node along the arching stems. They are usually best known for their vivid lavender berries; however, 'Leucocarpa' produces abundant white berries. Our specimens came to us from the J. C. Raulston Arboretum in North Carolina. The flowers appear from July to September. They are inconspicuous and pale pink. This root-hardy shrub can be planted in partially shaded to full-sun locations that provide constant moisture throughout the growing season. During most winters in the Chicago area, the stems will sustain freeze damage. If they do not leaf out well, they may be cut to within a few inches of the soil surface. Most plantings in the Chicago region max out at 3½ feet in height, whereas in warmer climates, they can reach almost twice that size.
