Blue Leadwort

The alternate leaves of blue leadwort extend from branched stems that creep along the garden floor. It makes a great ground cover or filler plant between bulbs or low-growing perennials. Tiny true-blue flowers are produced in clusters on the tips of each stem in late summer through fall. The buds have a tinge of violet, and the calyx -- the part from which the flower emerges -- is deep red. In autumn, the leaves turn an attractive red, while the colorful flowers are still blooming. Deep-blue flowers set against lush green leaves are an eye-catching combination. New growth emerges late in spring, so the gardener needs to take care not to accidentally dig or rake near the plants. This is an excellent garden creeper from China.
