Vyvyan Pennell Clematis
Is it possible for plant to produce two completely different types of flowers at different times? Yes! This clematis vine flowers in the spring and again in the late summer but the flowers are completely different shapes. The spring flowers are fancy and ruffled, but the late summer flowers are less fancy with a more simple shape.
Vyvyan Pennell clematis is a reblooming vine. In late spring it bears large (6-8 inch) double blooms that have purple outer petals and lighter inner petals. In late summer it bears single blooms that are a bluish-lilac color with a silver stripe down the center of each petal. Like most clematis this vine likes cool shaded conditions around its roots but sunshine for the spreading part of the plant. It is perfect to plant within a sunny border and especially at the back of a border where it can climb over a fence or trellis. Lightly prune dead flowers and and growth in early summer after the first flowering.
