Winter King Hawthorn

Can you have a hawthorn without any thorns? Maybe. This hawthorn tree has very few thorns and so is a good tree to plant where children might climb.

Winter King hawthorn is a form of the green hawthorn that is native to the southeastern parts of North America. Winter King bears masses of fragrant white flowers in the spring which then turn into red fruits in early fall. The dark green leaves change to red and then purple in the fall and during the winter months the attractive gray bark is visible. This cultivar is largely thornless and grows to about 25 to 35 feet tall and wide with a dense rounded form. While tolerant of a range of soils such as clay and dry soils, it must have a well-drained location. Prune in winter if necessary.
