Neapolitan Cyclamen

Almost all cyclamens are native to the Mediterranean basin, but some, like Neapolitan cyclamen, are cold hardy and can be grown outdoors, especially if protected by snow cover. Neapolitan produces pink or white flowers in late summer to early fall on 3 to 6-inch stems bearing decorative gray-green leaves with prominent markings. Its roots grow from the bottom and sides of a tuber, and the leaves and flowers emerge from the top. The name cyclamen comes from the Greek word, kyklos, or circular, a reference to the spiral twisting of the flower stalk. Plant them in partial shade in a woodland or rock garden.
