Variegated Flax Lily

The variegated flax-lily is derived from the Tasman flax-lily which is native to southeastern Australia and Tasmania. Variegata flax-lily has long green strappy leaves edged in white that can grow to be up to 3 or 4 feet long. The plant forms a clump about 1 to 2 feet wide. Variegata bears blue flowers in the spring that are followed by bright purple berries in the fall. It prefers shady spots with moderate moisture, and with its brightly striped leaves it can be a bright addition to a shady border. This plant is not hardy in Chicago, although it can be overwintered in a warm spot with good indirect light.
