Japanese Shield Fern

The Japanese wood fern is native to the woods and forests of eastern Asia where it thrives in the partial shade and humus-rich forest floor. This fern is also known as the copper shield fern and its name is derived from the coppery color of the new fronds which deepen to a dark green with age. It is a medium-sized fern, growing to about 2 feet tall and a foot wide. While it prefers moist conditions it can withstand morning or afternoon sun if the soil moisture is maintained. Conversely it can cope with drier conditions if light shade is maintained.

The Japanese wood fern is a lovely addition to a fern garden or as an understory in a wooded area. This plant has been awarded the Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society.
