Crown Imperial

This impressive large bulb in the lily family produces 3-foot stems with deep yellow, bell-shaped flowers hanging down beneath a topknot of green leaves, somewhat resembling a pineapple in shape. Plant this cultivar in full sun, in very well-drained soil. This cultivar has been planted in gardens since 1857. The straight species, which is usually orange, is native to high mountain ranges from Turkey to northwest India, where it is subject to drought most of the year. This is a great selection if deer and rabbits are a problem because the bulbs produce a skunk-like odor that repels them.
