Epiphylla Ginkgo

The Epiphylla Ginkgo is an unusual female cultivar more commonly grown in Japan. When reaching maturity it will produce the strong smelling Ginkgo fruits and the fruits have unusual winged stems. This Ginkgo oddity is sometimes known as Ginkgo biloba var. epiphylla, Ohatsuki Ginkgo, Ohazuki Group RHS, and in Japan as Ohatsuki Ichou. The discovery of the epiphyllous form has been credited to Mr. Shirai in 1891. It rarely reaches a height over 13 feet and has an unusual wide open oval or vase shape . Its leaves are larger than is typical, more rounded, and with less of a division. It prefers sun or semi shade and has beautiful golden yellow fall color. It would make an interesting garden accent or curiosity.
