Daniel Weeks Ginger-Lily

Among the hardy flowering gingers, 'Daniel Weeks' is one of the longest lasting. Flowering spikes that can reach up to six feet high begin to open around the end of July, and bloom continues to mount the spike until the first frost. While its height makes it appropriate for back of the border, you may want to keep it next to a doorway or a patio for its honeysuckle scent.

Hardy flowering gingers originated in the Himalayas, but they've since naturalized around the world, from Australia to Africa to South America. They're rhizomatous tender perennials, like dahlias, and can be overwintered like dahlias. Lift them in the fall after the first frost, and store in lightly moistened peat or vermiculite in a cool dry area. Give them full sun if you can, rich soil, and constant moisture and you'll be well rewarded.
