Lenten Rose
From late winter to late spring, hellebore, or Lenten rose, produces outward-facing flowers, 2 to 3 inches wide, in dappled shade. Ivory Prince is the trade name for this reliably hardy, profuse bloomer. In spite of temperatures dipping to minus 16 degrees Fahrenheit in January 2014, this cultivar started blooming the second week of April. It shook off the 2-inch snowfall of April 15 and continued blooming. The flowers—actually bracts—are ivory white with mint-green centers and rosy pink backs. Lenten rose produces glossy, leathery leaves that remain on the plant over winter. The leaves are palmate, with up to eight narrow, toothed segments. It's hard to tell when hellebores are finished blooming, as the flowers take months to fade away after slowly turning green.
