American Alumroot

American Alumroot is an attractive native plant for sun or partial shade. It matures to a mounded form about 15 inches tall and 18 inches wide. Tall airy panicles of greenish white flowers appear in the late spring and early summer increasing the height to about 24 inches and adding a nice lacy visual effect. The leaves are roughly heart shape and lobed. The spring leaves have some light reddish coloration, but mature to predominantly green. Different individual plants can have more or less coloration and patterning to the otherwise green leaves. This variation has resulted in the selection of interesting and decorative horticultural varieties. Heuchera americana is resistant to deer and will attract bees and birds. It can be used in groups as a groundcover in semi-shade, and also works well in natural area plantings and mixed perennial borders. In milder climates the foliage is evergreen attractive through the winter.
