PeeGee Hydrangea

Grandiflora is commonly known as pee gee hydrangea, although the nickname pee gee hydrangea is often applied to other Hydrangea paniculatas as well. This is a fast growing shrub that can grow as tall as 25 feet and as wide as 15 feet. The large, conical flowerheads , typically 6 to 8 inches long, consist mostly of showy but sterile flowers with only a few smaller, fertile but non-showy flowers underneath. In July the flowers emerge white and slowly age to pink before turning brown in the fall. The color of the flowers is not affected by the pH of the soil. Grandiflora does well in full sun to light shade and is moderately drought tolerant. It blooms on new wood, so the flowers are not susceptible to late spring frosts. This is a hybrid of Hydrange paniculatawhich is native to Japan, China, and Korea, where it grows at altitudes up to 4,000 feet.
