Panicle Hydrangea
Pink Diamond stands 8 to 15 feet tall with a spread of 8 to 15 feet. The large, conical flowerheads are 12 inches long and are composed of showy but sterile flowers and smaller, fertile but non-showy ones. Strong stems hold the flowerheads upright without drooping. The flowers emerge white in July, and turn a deep pink as they mature. With new flowers continually emerging at the tip of the cone, the flowerheads are a lovely blend of color as the deep pink at the base of the cone melts into a lighter pink in the middle and then creamy white as new flowers emerge at the tip. The color of the flowers is not affected by the pH of the soil. The blooms continue into the fall. Pink Diamond blooms on new wood, so the flowers are not susceptible to late spring frosts. It does well in full sun to light shade and is moderately drought tolerant. In 1993, Pink Diamond received the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society. This is a cultivar of Hydrangea paniculata, which is native to Japan, China, and Korea, where it grows at altitudes up to 4,000 feet.
