Maiden Grass

Morning Light maiden grass creates a lovely, misty, fine, vase-shaped clump. The very fine green and white leaves create the prettiest foliage of all the Miscanthus. Morning Light prefers sun but will tolerate light shade. It has a mature size of 5 feet high and 4 feet wide and is hardy in USDA Zones 5 to 9. The red-bronze flowers emerge rather late in the fall. The dry fall foliage and flowers are attractive throughout the winter, but should be trimmed back before the new spring growth appears to avoid damaging the new leaves. Native to east Asia, this species has done so well that some cultivars are invasive, particularly Purpurascens. It's best to look for late-flowering clones that will not have time to set seed. It is resistant to deer.
