Hybrid Rugosa Rose
Linda Campbell hybrid rugosa rose (Rosa 'Morten') produces clusters of red flowers ranging in size from five to 15 blooms on a 6-by-8-foot bush rose. This rose does best when planted in full sun and moderately fertile soil. The wrinkled leaves are moderately resistant to black spot but are susceptible to powdery mildew. The flowers, unfortunately, are not fragrant, but the stems have fewer thorns than most rugosas.
Rugosa roses and their hybrids are salt tolerant (the species grows along the shoreline in Asia); thus they are perfect for use along Chicago-area roadways that are subject to wind-blown spray or runoff from de-icing salts. A byproduct of the salt spray is the reduction in powdery mildew infections. Like many other shrub roses, this plant will slowly produce suckers around the base that increase the breadth of the plant.
