Canada Hemlock

This graceful evergreen has many uses ranging from a hedge to a specimen plant. The Canadian hemlock, native to eastern North America, is an extremely high-quality evergreen tree that performs well in Illinois. It has a pendulously pyramidal habit reaching a mature height of 40' to 70'. The light yellow-green foliage of spring turns glossy dark-green in summer. It prefers cool, moist, well-drained soils in full sun or partial shade, and will even tolerate full shade. Plant in a site protected from the wind. It can be pruned heavily in the spring for hedging. Small, oval brown cones hang from the branches like ornaments on a Christmas tree. Great evergreen--not widely used.
