Q. I have evergreens planted near a street. How can I protect them from salt damage?

A. While the best course is to plant only salt-resistant varieties near sources of winter salt spray, some protection can be obtained by placing barriers of burlap, plastic, or wood between the spray source and the shrubs. Separate barriers are preferable to wrapping individual plants.  If plants must be wrapped, use only burlap, do not wrap too tightly, and leave some air space.  In addition, attention should be paid to the grade surrounding the shrubs to prevent salt spray from pooling.
