Pollination Network of Lake Michigan Dune Communities

In partnership with the Door County Land Trust in Wisconsin, we are working on pollinator network studies at Ship Canal Nature Preserve. Pitcher’s thistle (Cirsium pitcheri), federally listed as threatened, is both a critical nectar source for migrating monarchs and supports a rich diversity of insect visitors that forage for both nectar and pollen. A 2016 pollination network study found that C. pitcheri attracts the greatest diversity of insects of any plant species found in the dune habitat and receives the greatest number of visitors, including both large species of bumblebees, small solitary bees, and several species of butterflies and moths. After assessing the pollinator network in 2016, we will be revisiting it in 2021 after invasive species removal, and again in 2022, after native species restoration. (Havens)
