Joutras Gallery

Philip Juras’s exhibition of landscape paintings celebrates the rich aesthetics, ecology, and history of Illinois prairies. A dozen large studio canvases and many smaller field paintings depicting remnants, restorations, and imagined re-creations take the viewer on a journey of prairie landscapes from the Wisconsin border to the southern end of Illinois.

Owl, Barn

Description: Spotted on Evening Island, the barn owl is rarely seen in this region now. Historically, however, they were more common. That's when Illinois was covered with pasture land. This nocturnal owl is known for its heart-shaped face, and its acute listening skills come in handy for hunting small mammals on the ground.
